Alberta is home to the Canadian/Western subspecies of Moose; these Moose can be found anywhere from the heavily forested willow swamps to the rolling grain fields. During the calling season in Aug/Sept the bulls are in pre-rut conditions and in search of food sources, this can make for an exciting hunt! The possibility of seeing a bull with antlers in excess of 40 inches wide is likely, while the temps are mild and the habits are somewhat pattern-able. Archery Moose hunting in Alberta opens at the same time as other species, giving us the ability to offer a great combination hunt with Mule Deer or Whitetail. Big bulls are often found in bachelor groups this time of year, making for an exciting hunt.
The early season rut Moose hunts are done in the Northwest region of Alberta, Canada. The terrain in this part of the province consists of large forested swamps and lakes, rolling grain fields, as well lush river systems these big Alberta bull Moose call home. This diverse area allows us to offer multiple styles of hunts in the true wilderness of Alberta!
On our archery moose Hunts, we have a couple of different styles of hunts. All are dependent on the conditions each year brings. You can expect to be alongside your guide covering ground either by pickup, ATV, boat, or foot. Each morning will start early in order to catch these bulls out feeding, depending on where you find a bull you will either stalk in for a shot or position yourself in the evening to intercept the bull returning to feed.
The Canadian/Western subspecies of Moose are in the middle of the size bracket. Being smaller than the Alaska/Yukon species to the north, and larger than the Shiras species to the south. A hunter can expect a 75% shot opportunity at a mature bull in archery season. Our typical mature bull will have antlers varying from 35-45 inches in width with the occasional 50" bull harvested and can often be found in velvet this time of year.
